Position Summary:
Our Director of Internal Corporate Communications is responsible for developing communications strategies and a global communications experience that inspires and engages our global associate base, drives a deeper understanding of Swagelok’s business strategies and informs employees on overall company performance. This role regularly participates in review of and discussions about key business activities and results and must be able to translate these into compelling stories that move associates around the world to action! This role has responsibility for overall performance of internal communication channels and publications, and that published content accurately reflects company vision and voice. The Director serves as a counselor to the Swagelok executive leadership team and will regularly engage with our CEO, COO, VP of HR and other senior team members to craft engaging leadership communications. This position reports to the vice president, corporate communications and is a key member of both the departmental leadership team and the company’s global operating committee.
A proven leader, this role is responsible for coaching and developing an extended team of a dozen experienced communications professionals. They direct internal and external resources and oversee the company’s internal communications channels and social media presence. The ability to build relationships, seek to understand and clarify business outcomes, manage complexity, influence change, and inspire a team to action is critical.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Create compelling, globally relevant narratives around Swagelok’s strategy to support its mission, vision, and values to drive associate engagement.
Collaborate with senior leaders in Human Resources, Finance, Commercial, and Operations to build a comprehensive annual internal communications plan to engage and inform a global audience.
Lead three senior managers, responsible for the following teams:
Business Communications: The content creators for the company’s various internal communications channels, the business communications team defines and develops a wide variety of content to inform, excite and engage the global associate audience. Business acumen, effective communication, planning and alignment are necessary for success as this team works with all functions in the business.
Communications Channel Strategy: The publishing and editorial planning arm of corporate communications, this team owns corporate content strategy for associate communications channels, including identifying KPIs, ongoing measurement and creation of plans to meet established targets.
Knowledge Sharing: A centralized consulting group charged with continuing to expand the use of best practice knowledge sharing methodologies in the business. Includes the definition and enablement of a content management strategy for institutional knowledge stored on the company’s intranet, and guidelines and best practices for use of collaborative platforms such as Yammer.
Expand the diversity of authors and content delivery methods published on our internal channels. This role has accountability for delivering an effective and efficient editorial process for internal communications and establishing standards for agreed-upon work.
Develop event content for 3-4 global events per year as the senior communicator on the global operating committee. Accountable for defining content outcomes that meet business objectives, providing ideas for creative facilitation, and at various times, creating content directly for executives.
Consult on and/or review corporate content developed by SMEs to ensure understanding and effective delivery of messages to the intended audience.
Serve as advisor and advocate for the application of change management techniques as part of building effective communications plans and content.
Coach senior leaders in developing and executing local communication plans with their teams.
Develop crisis communications and business continuity plans in partnership with the company’s strategic risk committee.
Develop communications for Swagelok’s executive leadership team, including messaging platform development, speech writing, presentation creation, media strategy and outreach, bylines and internal communications.
Build relationships with key communications partners/stakeholders to align efforts and improve associate experiences, reduce silos and deliver communications in the best interests of associates.
Coach and develop a high-functioning, multi-disciplinary team of professional communicators.
Cultivate a mindset of curiosity, global awareness, inclusion and change leadership across the team to drive effective communications solutions.
Apply knowledge of business and the marketplace to advance the organization’s goals. Leverage insights to shape and drive critical initiatives. Share industry developments with the team; helps them grasp business and industry fundamentals and understand how they contribute.
Approximate # of direct reports: 3+ (Total team size ~12)
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements
Required:
Bachelor degree, preferably in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or Business. MBA a plus.
Minimum 15 years of related experience in communications, marketing or HR roles of increasing responsibility
Experienced and comfortable with establishing and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders and peers.
Knowledge and experience developing strong, clear and measurable communications strategies, goals and plans aligned with business priorities.
Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills with ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Exceptional verbal and written communications skills; articulate and comfortable with public speaking.
Prior manufacturing experience a plus. International experience preferred.
