This position is in Helena, Montana. Helena is cradled in the Montana Rocky Mountains and adjacent to the clear waters of the Missouri River. Helena offers a wide array of recreational opportunities. There are excellent fishing opportunities around Helena at one of four outstanding lakes – Hauser, Lake Helena, Holter, and Canyon Ferry. The forests surrounding Helena are home to an abundance of deer and elk. You can hike or mountain bike right from town on Mount Helena, a 628-acre park that looks down on the city from its 5,460-foot peak. Designated a ride center by the International Mountain Biking Association, Helena has over 75 miles of trails that originate in the Downtown area, offering visitors a world-class mountain biking or hiking experience. This is a year-round, full-time position. Weekend and holiday work will be required seasonally. Work schedule for this position is typically Monday – Thursday with IO-hour days May-September and Monday – Friday with 8-hour days October – April. Additionally, the Maintenance Worker 2 may be delegated periodic on-call responsibilities responding to maintenance needs which could require weekends, evenings, and nights.
This position requires frequent travel and working conditions in a field setting. Overnight travel is also required and may entail using FWP facilities. Working conditions include working outdoors in all seasons and in unpredictable and inclement weather. The incumbent should be in good overall physical condition and possess sufficient outdoor skills to withstand the rigors and demands of outdoor work and to carry out duties effectively and safely. Lifting 30-50 pounds is commonly required.
Identity of applicants who become finalists may be released to the public if the Department deems it necessary.
Employees who exceed 1,040 hours in a calendar year are also provided health, dental and life insurance. Other benefits include retirement, paid vacation, sick and holidays. This position may be covered by a VEBA (Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association).

Job Duties (narrative summary):
The Helena Maintenance Worker 2 position is part of the Parks and Outdoor Recreation Division and a member of the Region 4 maintenance team. The position reports to the Maintenance Team Supervisor and performs a wide variety of semi-skilled or manual work repairing, maintaining, and improving habitat areas and vegetation as well as grounds and facilities at state parks, fishing access sites, wildlife management areas, and administrative facilities. In coordination with the Regional Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Team Supervisor, and other Region 4 Maintenance staff, this position directly performs maintenance tasks, assists in establishing workflows for regular or routine tasks, actively trains and mentors seasonal staff, and may be identified as crew lead for specific sites or projects.
Maintenance responsibilities include: habitat maintenance such as fertilizing, farming, tree planting, mowing, and managing large scale irrigation systems; public drinking water distribution systems; waste water systems; HVAC systems; vault latrine and full service flush toilets; historic sites and structures; campgrounds with electrical distribution systems; picnic shelters; boat docks and ramps; solid rail and wire fences; paved and gravel roadways and parking areas; paved and aggregate surfaced trails; boardwalks; directional, information, and interpretive signs/kiosks; and maintenance shop facilities and other associated infrastructure and equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to effectively work in a team atmosphere with regional maintenance staff. The position requires an individual capable of building and maintaining interpersonal relationships with staff and the ability to communicate effectively with the public, providing accurate information about site facilities, regulations, fees, and recreational opportunities.
The incumbent will frequently work independently without presence of a direct supervisor. They should be able to take initiative, achieve and maintain a high level of quality work performance, behave ethically and appropriately when serving visitors, and recognize and accept authority. In certain situations, awareness skills must be applied to situations where other factors may require a degree of sensitivity and restraint such as in wildlife management areas, riparian areas, or historic and cultural sites.
The incumbent is responsible for carrying out various types of maintenance work. They should possess the following knowledge and skills:

Possess or the ability to learn noxious weed identification, treatment protocols, and equipment associated with chemical control
Must possess ability to use spreadsheets and other programs necessary to complete maintenance logs and personnel reports.
Working know ledge of methods and practices of general maintenance and construction work including, but not limited to, carpentry, plumbing, welding, engine repair, and electrical work.
Working knowledge of the care and use of tools and operation of a variety of heavy and light construction equipment and farming equipment. This includes familiarity with routine equipment maintenance and the ability to train staff on operation.
Knowledge of operations and maintenance of drinking water, wastewater, and septic systems.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:
The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalency and three years of job-related experience. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
