Job Description :
Tacoma Public Utilities’ Customer Services is currently creating an eligible list to fill temporary Meter Reader vacancies as they occur for the next year. The temporary appointments are anticipated to last one year. Meter Readers are responsible for accurate and timely readings of electric, water and sewer meters. The City of Tacoma has approximately 560 routes including 65% residential walking routes and 35% commercial/rural driving routes. Residential walking routes require walking up to 6 hours (5-10 miles) per day; driving routes require sitting up to 6 hours per route. Daily meter routes include frequent public contact and complaint resolution. Meter Reader’s record consumption data in computerized handheld systems; report hazardous conditions, meter tampering and meter conditions; ensure data integrity; and provide excellent customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or equivalent;
1+ year of work experience involving customer contact;
Valid Washington State driver’s license;
Ability to walk for long periods of time;
Ability to work outdoors subject to adverse weather conditions;
Ability to work subject to potentially abusive and hostile customers, animals and environmental hazards.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Geography and street locations of Pierce County and South King County.
Methods, equipment and materials used in meter reading.
Operation of a motor vehicle, including all safety rules.
Applicable City laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures.
Record-keeping techniques.
Applicable health and safety regulations.
Maintain good public relations.
Work outdoors in adverse weather.
Learn to accurately read electric, water, and sewer meters.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Maintain records and prepare reports.
Learn to operate various equipment and machines including calculators, hand-held computers and small tools.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Work independently with little direction.
Operate, service and make minor repairs on equipment.
Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately.
