CVD Furnace Operator
3rd Shift

Job Summary and Mission
Operate CVD coating furnaces to coat carbide inserts.

Key Job Responsibilities

Load and unload the furnaces.
Monitor computerized controls involving temperatures, pressures, chemical flow rates, and gas flow rates to critical process parameters.
Perform and document the operation of the furnaces.
Ensure the integrity of the vacuum systems by conducting vacuum leak checks and performing periodic preventative maintenance.
Troubleshoot furnace problems, rebuild or replace furnace components as needed.
Ensure adequate gas and chemical levels, according to procedures, for correct operations.
Replace tanks as needed.
Will be responsible for setting up and separating product.
Enter quality data by furnace and heat results and monitor graph results.
Act as Emergency Responder within the Coating Department.

Commitment to working safely and understand all safety procedures.
Deviations in routine are handled according to operating procedures and/or work instructions.
Operator responsible for following inspection control plan, assuring product is processed according to proper routings, specifications and the quantity and style are correct.
Work to meet daily departmental production goals.
Must be reliable and dependable.
Communicate safety, quality and product issues with supervisor, team members and across shifts.

Knowledge and Skills

Understand oral and written procedures and instructions.
Is able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
Is able to use 30X scope.
Ability to use a personal computer and various software such as SAP MII, locate information in QMS, and on the Kennametal Intranet for Procedures and work instructions.
Is able to handle inserts with fingers without chipping.
Communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers.
Possess mechanical skills to rebuild and replace furnace components as needed.
Is able to read and understand operating procedures, defect criteria and routing information.
Knowledge and ability to perform necessary actions in emergency situations, such as gas leaks.
Proficiency reached through on the job training in twelve (12) to eighteen (18) months.

Work Environment

Potentially dangerous environment involving combustible chemicals and high temperature furnaces.
Employees are required to become Hazmat trained.
Room is temperature and humidity controled.
Dust collection and system in place.
Safety glasses with side shields and Safety Shoes required.
Self-contained breathing apparatus available in case of furnace malfunction.
Environment monitored for hazardous gases.
Noise levels not over eighty-five db for more than eight hours on a time-weighted average.
Hearing protection recommended and incumbent placed in a hearing preservation program.

Physical Demands

Frequent standing, five to six hours per eight hour period of intermittent walking, occasional reaching, bending, kneeling and squatting with break opportunities.
Climbing a three-foot step stool and stretching in awkward positions.
Normal strength required to assemble and disassemble furnace sections, as well as lifting objects weighing an average of twenty pounds (some reaching as much as, but not more than, thirty (30) pounds).
Will be required to pass a Respirator Medical Evaluation and participate on the Plant Emergency SCBA response team for responding to gas emergencies.
Must also obtain clearance from the Department of Homeland Security to work in CVD department.
Self-contained breathing apparatus required for specific tasks.
Environment monitored for hazardous gases.

Problem Solving

Incumbents responsible for the furnaces’ performance.
Interpret the available data to report and/or correct furnace problems.
Some technical trouble shooting. Job duties performed with latitude.
Supervisor must be notified of any deviation from operating procedures.
Work schedules change from day to day, determined by furnace cycles.
Combination of learned knowledge and reasoning skills used to solve problems.

Education and Experience

Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
