Agricultural Development Program (AgDev)
The Agricultural Development (AgDev) program aims to catalyze a country-led, inclusive, agricultural transformation (IAT) process by developing and scaling products, services, policies, and system-wide innovations that benefit small scale producers, empower women, and improve nutritional outcomes. We want farmers in Sub- Saharan Africa (SSA) and South Asia (SA) to be empowered with the knowledge, tools, and technologies and have the chance to improve their livelihoods and realize the potential of economic growth through Agriculture.
The Position
Reporting to the Deputy Director, Livestock, The Program Officer – Livestock and Aquaculture will work with Senior Program officers (SPOs) across the team, primarily with Animal Production and Animal Systems SPOs, helping to progress the objectives of the Livestock portfolio. The livestock portfolio aims to contribute to Inclusive Agriculture Transformation through our four goals, (i) increasing productivity, (ii) increasing household income, (iii) empowering women and (iv) improving household nutritional outcomes for small scale livestock producers (SSLPs) in SSA and SA.
Specific responsibilities include:
Support the livestock portfolio, specifically the Animal Production and Animal Systems bodies of work in implementing the endorsed strategy.
Implement the plan at the portfolio and bodies-of-work level in collaboration with the team (e.g. discovery to delivery of technologies and national systems support) to accelerate our desired impact for SSLPs.
Be the coordinator within the livestock team to oversee the effectiveness of the portfolio strategy execution, portfolio wide findings that will inform required changes and continuous improvement that will keep our efforts relevant to the needs of SSLPs, bringing differentiated value toward impact through our portfolio goals.
Represent the Livestock portfolio in AgDev wide working groups as appropriate and be the point person for our AgDev SPM (Strategy, Planning and Management) team.
In collaboration with SPOs, design, develop and manage investments to deliver our objectives across the livestock portfolio
Be the analytical and strategy expert within the team to review performance of investments and challenge the team to learn and improve.
Contribute to ongoing efforts in identifying innovative opportunities where the Foundation can and should play a unique role to accelerate impact in the lives of small-scale livestock and aquaculture producers in SSA and SA.
Contribute to learning and maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the causes that hinder productivity and production of livestock in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
Represent the Foundation externally as required with credibility and humility.
Candidate Profile
Experience, Skills, and Personal Characteristics:
5+ years of experience in analytics and strategy development/execution in the area of specialism.
A good portfolio of accomplishments in the area of expertise within Management consultancies, industry or academia on effective execution and completion of projects/programs.
Demonstrated ability to analyze evidence, diagnose root causes of issues, develop strategy and implement strategy to resolve issues.
Experience in data architecture and innovations
Knowledge and ideally some network involving livestock industries (e.g. Animal Health, Animal Genetics and Animal Nutrition) and/or governments/policy makers.
A ‘can do’ attitude with an approach that guides and motivates the team to explore new approaches and partners, taking risks that can potentially accelerate our pathway to improve the lives of small-scale livestock keepers.
Intellectual quickness, curiosity, discipline, resourcefulness and resilience.
Ability to work with flexibility, efficiency, enthusiasm and diplomacy both individually and as part of a team.
Demonstrated passion for the foundation’s values with commitment to deliver results against the foundation’s mission.
High level of personal and professional integrity, along with a sense of humor.
Excellent written and oral communication skills to convey complex situations in a clear and concise manner with a broad and diverse audience.
Language skills beyond English, especially those relevant to Africa and South Asia is a plus.
Willing to travel nationally and internationally (30%).
Specific Education level and Experience:
A master’s degree, ideally an MBA.
Program/project management experience with strategy development and execution.
Management consultancy experience in multiple sectors desirable
Experience in working in developing countries or on strategies for Low- and Middle-Income countries, particularly Africa or South Asia highly desirable.
Must be able to legally work in the country where this position is located without visa sponsorship.
