Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Public Relations Specialist I for the University Press. This position is responsible for creating publicity and promotional campaigns for all books published by Rutgers University Press, including those published by our client/partner presses, (currently: Bucknell University Press and University of Delaware Press), and especially on high-profile “trade” books, targeted at a general audience. The goal of these campaigns is to generate effective and significant print, broadcast, and electronic media: articles, reviews, and social media interest, to raise consumer awareness, among both scholarly and general interest readers, to raise the profile of the Press in our core publishing disciplines, the scholarly community, and in the book world, as well as at Rutgers and in the region, and ultimately, to increase sales. The Public Relations Specialist I serves as a senior position in the department and is included in the Director’s management team.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Manages publicity program for RUP working independently under very minimal supervision. Develops and executes an original publicity plan for over 150 trade, scholarly, and academic books each year.
Writes press releases and researches and develops original reviewer lists for each book.
Approves final book promotional and jacket copy.
Analyzes market and audience for each book to develop the best overall marketing campaign. Produces all galleys, Advanced Reading Copies, and samplers.
Independently manages a budget for all publicity activities.
Works with the webmaster to maintain social networking presence and create electronic promotional tools for individual books.
Monitors and archives all review and event activity for all RUP books and RUP publishing activities. Publicizes and promotes all relevant promotional activities and reviews to the university, press staff, target audiences, book reviewers and media outlets, and sales reps.
Responsible for building, maintaining and improving RUP promotional industry relationships including all academic and local and national trade print book reviewers, bloggers, and radio producers.
Expands and maintains contact with key media and reviewers at media outlets which correlate to the press’s major lists and key titles.
Makes media visits each season, including NJ and NY, and along the Mid-Atlantic corridor.
Attends Book Expo America and London Book Fair or similar trade shows as needed. May make appointments with other media nationwide in conjunction with exhibit travel.
Expands and maintains media contacts with key international media when appropriate, working with our international distributors and the Marketing & Sales Director.
Follows up via email and phone on requests for review copies, story and article ideas, and interview requests. Follows up on significant media reviews, coverage, and/or events to repromote titles as needed.
Updates and maintains internal media database and CRM, utilizes industry outreach tools and databases.
Collaborates, instructs, and advises authors on how to publicize their books and utilize their contacts and networks with the goal of generating reviews, arranging book events, signings, social media interest, and launch parties.
Organizes most author events, book sales, and press events at the university and throughout the U.S. and coordinates such publicity efforts with our international distribution partners.
Attends local author events, book sales and press publicity events as necessary.
Documents, records, and maintains all reviews and media mentions for front list and backlist titles. Inputs review or media coverage information into press wide database for use in and direct mail pieces.
Maintains and circulates a file of all publicity and promotional activities (monthly to the staff and quarterly to authors).
Supervises any interns or the marketing assistant who may perform any and all of these duties.

Under Policy 60.1.35, Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility. Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine. Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Minimum Education and Experience
A bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, communications, journalism, English, a related field, or the equivalent.
Minimum of two years relevant experience in a public relations or a promotions/event planning function.
Certifications/Licenses
Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Expertise in social media, and broad understanding of publishing and media trends.
Experience in planning and project management.
Computer literate to include industry standard software, Microsoft Office, Google Docs, WordPress, and Adobe Creative Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
At least two years’ experience in publicity or marketing, ideally in trade or scholarly book publishing, including a well-developed list of media contacts and experience pitching to such contacts.
Some knowledge of the academic marketplace, and some of the fields and regions in which we publish, as well as some familiarity with various publishing databases.
Experience with title management systems (Firebrand Title Management), CRM, and media databases (Cision) as well as industry specific platforms (Edelweiss, NetGalley, PubAlley).
Equipment Utilized
Microsoft Office, Windows or Mac OS.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Ability to lift 40 pound boxes from floor to counter or desk.
Special Conditions
Some evening and weekends required. Compensatory time will be offered.
