The Position
The school social worker is the link between home, school, and the community. Under the direction of the Network Dean of Climate & Culture, the Licensed School Social Worker provides direct and indirect social work services to students experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioral problems that interfere with their performance in school, and facilitates communication among school, home and community providers. The responsibilities of this role include the following:
Determine, along with the other Child Study Team members, parents and appropriate school personnel, the school program an individualized educational plan appropriate to the needs of those students classified based upon classroom observation, teacher conferences and a comprehensive review of the scholar’s cumulative file.
Provide direct and indirect School Social Work services as specified in students’ IEPs Assist students to improve their academic, personal and social functioning.
Provide social skills, anger management, stress reduction or other similar instruction to students who are experiencing social/emotional/behavioral problems that interfere with their learning or the ability of others to learn.
Provide short-term individual and group counseling to students who are experiencing social/emotional/behavioral problems that interfere with their learning or the ability of others to learn.
Provides information to families and assists them in accessing long-term or intensive counseling services, as needed.
Provide information and assistance to families to help them understand their child’s educational disability and equip them with the tools necessary to support their child’s educational and/or behavioral progress.
Provide parent training and support as needed.
Provide information to parents regarding the referral/assessment process, special education services available within the district, and their rights relative to special education.
Conduct social/developmental assessments of students referred for special education, assists in determining eligibility for special education.
Consult and collaborate with social services, mental health and other community providers.
Maintain an accurate record of student, parent and other contacts.
Strengthen and support parent and family involvement and conduct home visits as part of the support structure.
Share responsibility for grade-level and school-wide activities.
Monitor students attendance and work proactively to increase attendance.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will hold at minimum a Bachelor’s degree and certification as appropriate. All Student Support Services staff will be required to provide a copy of a valid New Jersey Certificate. Applicants must demonstrate cultural sensitivity, ability to communicate with parents and students, be a team player, hold high expectations of students and possess a deep understanding of child development.
