The SCJS is proud to be the only Jewish studies center in the United States to host a Sephardic Studies program. This Sephardic Studies program has grown rapidly over the last few years to become an internationally renowned research hub and public resource. The SCJS has an outstanding opportunity for a Sephardic Studies Assistant Director.
The Sephardic Studies Program Assistant Director works with the SSP Chair to develop and implement a vision for the Sephardic Studies Program. The Assistant Director will be managing communications, programming, budgeting, and advancement for the Sephardic Studies Program (SSP). The Assistant Director reports to the SCJS Associate Director who helps support the execution of the SSP vision in line with SCJS best practices for programming, communication, advancement, etc. The SSP assistant director position is located in the Center and participates in SCJS staff meetings, and contributes to other shared SCJS staff duties as needed. The Assistant Director may supervise student workers of the Program.
Event Management (40%)
Plan, develop, and implement SSP events.
Set up and staff all SSP events,
Manage the SSP annual program calendar.
Create and implement a marketing plan and materials for each event, including visually appealing electronic and print promotional materials, publications, articles (brochures, newsletters, online newsletters), and publicity for even
Develop and manage promotion and publicity of events and activities Communications and Social Media (25%)
Create an SSP communications plan that expands SSP communications efforts and coordinates SSP communications with SCJS/JSIS communications and branding.
Manage regular SSP communications in conjunction with SCJS staff and SSP Chair Priorities include overseeing email database, developing Sephardic Studies-related content for SCJS and SSP communications, and developing other SSP web and print materials, as needed.
Manage, and develop content for, SSP social media accounts including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram Fiscal Management and Advancement (30%)
Develop SSP annual budget in coordination with SSP Chair and SCJS Associate Director.
Track and reconcile the Sephardic Studies budget(s)
Provide regular updates to SCJS Associate Director and SSP Chair
Manage SSP-related vendor payments and visiting faculty honoraria and reimbursements.
Work with UW advancement to implement existing SSP advancement plan
Cultivate donor relationships and networks in conjunction with the SSP Chair, UW Advancement, and the SCJS Associate Director.
Update strategic advancement plan for SSP as needed.
Assist with/oversee the writing and submission of grants to foundations to gain support for the SSP research agenda, working closely with JSIS Grants Manager Performs other duties as assigned (5%) Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree with at least two years’ experience in communications, higher education, non-profit management, grant writing, event coordination, project management, and/or marketing.
Proactive and self-motivated with ability to work well independently, and to be an excellent collaborator and team member.
Outstanding organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to establish priorities.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Administrative/office experience, including supervisory experience, in a higher education setting.
Flexible schedule to allow for working occasional evening and weekend events sponsored by SSP and SCJS. Additional Preferred Background/Skills
Master’s degree in business administration, non-profit management, communications, Jewish Studies, or other relevant field
Familiarity with content management platforms like WordPress, social media tools, and new media development.
Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office—in particular Excel—and desktop publishing (InDesign, Photoshop), with an aptitude for learning additional software programs, as needed.
