GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS SPECIALIST

Our Geographic Information Systems Specialist supports AEA enterprise GIS and data projects. The GIS Specialist will research, identify and acquire specific data and transform that data into geospatial layers that conform to defined data standards, are topologically correct, and are in accordance with metadata standards. In addition, this position will prepare and present the results both internally and externally.
We’re looking for someone who has a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography/GIS, Science, Engineering or related field. A minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in the following areas: Developing and editing geospatial data using standard geospatial tools, specifically ArcGIS/ArcMap, SDE and other ESRI developed GIS tools; development and documentation of geospatial data via compliant metadata; and developing and reviewing geospatial or tabular data to meet data standards, such as ensuring requisite data schemas, file naming conventions, etc.
Must demonstrate knowledge of concepts and principles of geospatial data management and general data quality assurance processes, experience in developing written technical documentation (such as metadata, training materials, workflow diagrams, white papers, etc.), experience in creating maps to communicate issues, to provide status updates or provide general spatial information to lay persons and geospatial experts. Demonstrate the ability to orally communicate technical information effectively to lay persons and geospatial technical experts alike and experience handling complex metadata; scripting/automating edit processes; and/or using established metadata tools and programs that are in advanced xml handling, preferred.

Essential Functions:
Identify and acquire data in its original formats from identified sources.
Perform the initial Quality Control (QC) on all acquired data as well as on produced geospatial representations of that data. Works to resolve QC issues.
Convert all formats of data acquired into single, well-documented geospatial files.
Create and ensure metadata is associated with each geospatial file.
Prepare maps for progress demonstration or to illustrate data complexities and issues.
Assist with data collection, consolidation, and the sharing and general data management activities.
Generate geospatial data, databases, analysis, maps, services and applications according to standards or specifications provided.
Attend meetings as scheduled.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Technology, Equipment, Systems, and Tools
Requires advance skills in developing and editing geospatial data using standard geospatial tools, specifically ArcGIS/ArcMap, SDE and other ESRI developed GIS tools. Also requires advanced skills in word processing, database software, email and general office equipment.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $35.00 – $51.00 per hour
